September Book
By Zoe, Janelle, Lilinoe and Dhystiney
Our Book Club pick for September was The Music of Dolphins by Karren Hesse. The book is about a girl who lived with dolphins from the age of 4 until her teenage years when she was found off the coast of an unpopulated island near Florida. She was taken to a facility were she is taught to speak English and scientists study her. The scientists want to learn her dolphin ways. This book is good for grades fourth through sixth.
In February, we read Walk Two Moons, by Sharon Creech. In this book, Salmanca takes a cross country trip with her eccentric grandparents to find her mother. Along the way, she makes many discoveries about her family and herself. We tracked Salʻs road trip and the places she visited on our own maps.
Our pick for March was Tuck Everlasting. The Tuck family discovered a spring that is like a fountain of youth. One sip of its waters and you could live for ever. Is the spring a blessing or a curse? Recommended for grades 5 and up.
In November, the book club read Lion, the Witch, and the Wardrobe. We enjoyed traveling to Narnia with Lucy, Peter, Edmund, and Susan to battle the white witch. We made a booklet about the novel, tasted Turkish Delight, and watched the movie version of the story. Recommended for grades 5 and up.
The Waiau Book Club worked hard to help our school celebrate the birthday of Dr. Seuss in March. Book club members painted a banner for the cafeteria and made a video for the school to watch.
